XENA the Warrior Princess came from the town of Amphipolis. When she was seventeen her town was destroyed by Cortese. Xena and her brother Lyceus fought to save their town in a battle which killed many villagers including her brother. Xena actions were blamed for their deaths and she was emancipted from her village. | Knowing that Hercules was a threat to her desire for total conquest, she attempted unsuccessfully to turn his best friend, Iolaus, against him. Shortly afterward, she rescued an infant from her army. Sensing weakness, her army mutinied, and forced her to pass through a brutal gauntlet. With the help of Hercules, she finally understood what her acts had done to others and to herself, and determined to redeem herself through noble acts. Thus begins the story of Xena: Warrior Princess. She later teamed up with Gabrielle, who has not only become an invaluable asset to her adventures, but a great friend as well. Xena is the daughter of Cyrene and allegedly Atrius. Some speculate Ares, the God of War is Xena's true father. Xena also has a young son, Solan. She gave him to the Centaurs to raise, in the hope that he wouldn't follow in her path. He no longer hates her or blames her for the death of his father, Barias, but does not know that she is his mother. CALLISTO, an inhabitant of Cirra, saw her family and village burn to the ground in a raid by Xena and her army when she was a young girl. Even though Xena did not want to kill the women and children, her general defied her order and the town was completely destroyed. The memories of the horror caused Callisto to become bitter and learn the ways of the warrior in order to avenge her loss. This bloodlust caused Callisto to go on a rampage of terror using Xena's name in order to ruin her reputation. After capturing Gabrielle, Callisto faced Xena in battle for the first time, with Xena emerging as the victor. This imprisonment did not last long as Callisto broke free of her dungeon. She proceeded to kill Perdicas, Gabrielle's new husband. This sent Gabrielle into a rage as she coerced Xena into allowing her revenge against Callisto. Another battle was waged where the two warriors ended up in a quicksand pit. Xena escaped the trap, but did not help Callisto to free herself. Working with Ares, Callisto was free to return to the world in Xena's body. She and Ares worked through Xena's dreams of guilt following the death of Callisto in the quicksand. Xena was given a chance to redeem herself by Hades, but in the body of Callisto. Callisto meanwhile planned to use her identity as Xena to kill Xena's mother and village. Xena was able to catch Callisto and send her into dreamland. There Xena played the guilt back onto Callisto, sending her back to Tartarus. Callisto manages to escape the Netherworld with the help of Hera, queen of the gods. Although she failed to complete her mission to destroy Hercules, she became an immortal. Hercules trapped Callisto in a dreary, unescapable cave and doomed her to an empty life as an immortal. Doomed to spend an eternity in the cave, Callisto is freed by Xena, who needed her help to destroy Velasca. Velasca, an Amazon warrior who became a God after eating ambrosia, had to be killed by an immortal, so Callisto obliged (against Gabrielle's strong wishes). After fighting with Velasca, the two fell into a lava pit only after Callisto had gained her Godhood as well. Callisto is again freed, but by Hope, the child of Gabrielle and Dahak (the devil). Callisto goes on a rampage, killing Xena's son (Solan) and his father Kaleipus. Although Hope was killed by Gabrielle, Callisto was still free as a God. Callisto is given a chance to re-live her life by traveling through to change the past if she were to kill Hercules before he was born. Callisto succeeds in her task at first, but Iolas steals the chromostone from Xena (from her days as an evil warlord) and goes back to save Hercules' mother. GABRIELLE, an inhabitant of Potidaea, is a spirited soul. Even from her first encounters with Xena, she showed a sense of adventure. Gabrielle managed to talk, albeit pester Xena into letting her tag along for the journey. She had yearning for something outside the small, simple life of Potidaea. Xena was that key. Innocent and sweet, she had never had to fight with her hands. Instead, she worked out her conflicts with words and her stories. She also had to be Xena's confidant and guide, especially when Xena's dark past would emerge and tempt her back into an evil life. Even with these skills, she managed to learn to fight with a staff that was given to her by the Amazons. Although she remained clean from shedding blood, she was able to hone her skills and become a valuable asset in a fight instead of a liability. During her travels with Xena, she was reunited with her childhood sweetheart, Perdicas. They parted ways once at the battle of Troy, but found themselves again following another battle. She made up her mind and the two were married with Xena watching over. Callisto, having escaped from her prison cell, killed Perdicas in cold blood. This destroyed Gabrielle and she nearly took her revenge on Callisto herself. Xena finished the job for her. On a trip to Britannia, Gabrielle sought refuge in the temple of the one God, trusting a follower of the one God to take care of her. Xena realizes that there was a problem and rushes to Gabrielle's aid, but she was too late. Gabrielle, after having drawn her first blood, was tied to an altar where she was impregnated with Dahak, the devil. After having given birth, Gabrielle named the baby Hope, wishing that it would carry her goodness inside it. Without Xena's knowledge, Gabrielle sent the baby down the river instead of killing it as Xena had demanded. Hope showed up later in the journey as a young child. Hope freed the goddess Callisto to help take over the world. Callisto and Hope teamed together and killed Xena's son Solan. After this Gabrielle realized that Hope was evil and killed her with poison. Even after this effort, Xena was still upset with Gabrielle and nearly killed her as revenge. It was then that they were transported to the land of Illusia, where they mended their relationship. JOXER is a bungling, incompetent fighter who tries to prove himself a mighty warrior, but eventually wins over Xena and Gabrielle who see the trueness of his heart. He first appears in the episode "Callisto" where he begins his quest to glory. He first offers his services to Xena as a warrior, which she refuses. He then turns to Callisto and asks to join her army. She sends him on a mission to capture Gabrielle and bring her back in order to earn his way into her army. After unsuccessfully trying to capture Gabrielle, who easily fends him off, he returns to camp. There he finds that Callisto has already taken Gabrielle prisoner herself and gives Joxer a new task. He must kill Gabrielle. Unable to bring himself to do it, he becomes a prisoner along with Gabrielle. They are freed by Xena after she defeats Callisto. In the episode "For Whom the Bell Tolls," Aphroditie is bent on breaking up a marriage and turns Joxer into a Xena-like fighting hero. He charms the princess away from the prince and almost starts a war between two kingdoms. Joxer also appears in "Girls J ust Wanna Have Fun" where he brings the head of Orpheus to Xena to get her help. Along with Joxer's help, Xena is able to kill Bacchus and free the young women he had turned into blood sucking bacchae. He earns Xena's respect in "Intimate Strangers" where he valiantly defends Xena's horse, Argo, against Callisto, who had injured the animal. In the slightly more modern episode "Xena Srolls," it's actually a decscendent of Joxer who gives producer Rob Tapert the idea to start the series "Xena: Warrior Princess." Jack Klienmen (Joxer) help Janis Covington (Gabrielle) and Melinda Pappas (Xena) find the Xena Srolls and fend off the Germans who also wish to get their hands on them. And Joxer even gets together with Meg, the Xena look-alike who poses as Xena in the episode "Warrior...Princess...Tramp." Xena's family came from Amphipolis, a village on the border of Thrace and Macedonia. Her parents were Atrius and Cyrene. Atrius left the family when Xena was quite young, but she knew him long enough to remember the way he would ride across a field on his warhorse and sweep her up into his arms. After Atrius left Amphipolis Cyrene supported the family by operating a tavern. Besides Xena Cyrene also raised two sons, Toris (the eldest child) and Lyceus (the youngest child). Sometime while Xena was still a child, perhaps when she was no older than six or seven, Atrius came home from the Temple of Ares in a drunken rage. He told Cyrene that he had to kill Xena. Cyrene later confessed to Xena that she had killed Atrius in order to prevent him from killing Xena. It was to be many years before Xena learned what became of her father. When Xena was still a teen-ager Amphipolis was attacked by a warlord named Cortese. The distinctive feature about Cortese' men was that they wore metal masks. Toris tried to persuade the people of Amphipolis to run to the hills and hide, but Xena and Lyceus persuaded at least some of them to stay and fight. Although Lyceus was killed Xena drove off Cortese' army. She formed an army from among her village men and started conquering villages around Amphipolis in an effort to create a buffer zone against further attacks by Cortese and other warlords. Soon after she formed her army Xena became engaged to Petracles, a young warlord who was either her partner or lieutenant, but Xena realized that Petracles was only interested in conquering her and once she'd agreed to marry him he lost interest in her. Xena left Petracles and perhaps soon after this experience Xena may have met Helen (the wife of Menelaus who ran off to Troy with Paris) Perhaps a year after setting out on her conquests, Xena captured a young Roman noble named Julius Caesar. She held him for ransom and entered into a relationship with him while waiting for his people to purchase his freedom. At the same time, an escaped slave who spoke Gaelic stowed away on Xena's ship. This slave, M'Lila, befriended and taught Xena how to fight with pressure points. After Caesar was freed he followed Xena's ship across the sea and captured it, taking Xena's army prisoner. The Romans sailed to a nearby shore and crucified Xena and the Amphipolitans. M'Lila, who had escaped detection, freed Xena and took her to Mount Nestos where Nicklio the Healer lived. Nicklio set Xena's bones and allowed her to recuperate, but before she was fully recovered Roman soldiers attacked the healer's cave, killing M'Lila. Xena killed the soldiers and swore to dedicate herself from that time onward to death. Healed but crippled by the harm done to her legs, Xena wandered east and joined the band of a vicious warlord named Borias. They became lovers and Xena developed a reputation as a ruthless butcher. When Borias attempted to engage in political maneuverings with Ming Tzu, the Emperor of Ch'in, and Lao Ma (wife of Lao-Tzu but effective ruler of the Kingdom of Lao), Xena interfered, kidnapping Ming Tien, young son and heir of Ming Tzu. Borias helped Ming Tzu capture Xena after Ming Tien was ransomed, and Ming Tzu set his men upon her in a hunt. Lao Ma found Xena in the woods and took her into her own home. There she gradually taught Xena a new philosophy, hoping to arrange an alliance with Ming Tzu whereby Borias and Xena would keep the peace. But Xena, though having her legs healed by Lao Ma, was too full of hate to agree to Lao Ma's plans, and she killed Ming Tzu. Lao Ma apparently drove Xena and Borias out of the Kingdom of Lao. Xena now became the Destroyer of Nations, slaughtering towns for the sake of sating her deep anger, and perhaps to hide her own grief and horror at what happened to the men of Amphipolis. Xena raised a new army and learned of the Ixion Stone. The stone carried the evil essence of the race of centaurs and would bestow great power on whomever used it to transform himself into an image of the father of the centaurs. Perhaps thinking it would give her the power to destroy the world, Xena tried to take the Stone from a group of centaurs led by Kaleipus. However, Xena had by this time borne a child to Borias, who was now her chief lieutenant and confidante. But he turned against Xena, probably when he realized the depth of her evil. Borias was murdered by Dagnine, one of Xena's lieutenants, and she was so shaken by the death of her lover that Xena gave her only child, Solan, to Kaleipus and withdrew her army. Among her subsequent adventures Xena fought in some pretty nasty battles. She was befriended by Goliath in Palestine, where Goliath saved her life while his family was slaughtered by a bandit-chieftain or warlord named Gareth (the largest of all giants). Xena was badly wounded in the slaughter and taken in by some local people who tended her wounds. These may have been the people she helped in the episode "The Royal Couple of Thieves", who apparently were Israelites (she and Autolycus recovered the Ark of the Covenant for them). Sometime later Xena ventured into Gaul. There she met the Celtic princess Boadicea, who had her own army. Xena recruited Boadicea as an ally but then took her army away, turning Boadicea out. Not to be humiliated, Boadicea married Prasutagas, a king from Britain, and he brought an army to Gaul to challenge Xena. Xena defeated them both and apparently moved on. Xena eventually returned to Greece and tried to take Corinth, which was defended at least in part by centaurs under Tyldus. Xena lost half her army and the centaurs fought her to a standstill. Either before or after this battle Xena became embroiled in a war with Bacchus and his followers. Eurydice, the wife of Orpheus, befriended Xena, and it may be that Xena for some reason agreed to help Orpheus against the Bacchi. But when Xena's army fought the Bacchi in a battle that lasted several days, Eurydice came between the two armies on the last day and was killed. Orpheus blamed Xena for Eurydice's death afterward, and though Bacchus was defeated on this occasion Xena had lost most of her army. Xena's greatest battle was the Battle of Torentz, in which her army slaughtered 10,000 men. Somewhere later on in her adventures Xena established a fortress named Elysia. Xena seems to have been constantly recruiting new warriors (in "The Warrior Princess" we first saw her when she was giving a training session). At some other time Xena's army burned down Callisto's village of Cirra, killing nearly all of its inhabitants. This battle may actually have been the battle of Corinth, the most famous battle in Xena's career. The pronunciation of the name is not entirely clear when Ares describes the battle to Strife in "Judgement Day" (see the Hercules episodes). One of the worst encounters of Xena's career happened when her army was marching west. The vanguard entered a ravine and was trapped there by the Horde. Xena's main body of troops spent the better part of a day trying to get to their comrades, whose cries they could hear above the din of battle. When Xena finally reached the place where her men had made a stand against the savage, axe-wielding barbarians, all that remained of the soldiers in her vanguard were bloody and ragged bones.
